The Boy In The Striped Pyjamas Lieutenant Kotler

Kotler is a young soldier who we met when Bruno was about to move to Out-With. It was like he was one of the soldiers that Bruno's father really liked. Bruno doesn't like Kotler much because he has an attitude and he calls him `little man` because Bruno is small. He makes Bruno feel cold. Like at one part of the book Bruno asked Kotler a favour for a spare tyre to make a swing. Bruno's sister Gretel liked Kotler so she flirted with him a lot. So Gretel was with Kotler in Bruno's garden ans when Bruno asked the favour from Kotler he got very sarcastic and said and he carries it on him!" Kotler is also a mean man. He likes to hurt people like Pavel (the waiter.) He accidentally spilled wine over his lap and he got very mad and he hurt him. He also shot a dog for barking! He is only 19 years old and he is flirting with Bruno's mother! He is a very strange and mean man but he is a very good character in the book.

Learning about John F.Kennedy.

John F.Kennedy
One of our pupils 007 brought in a newspaper dated the day after J.F.K. was killed
We got this information from it. John F. Kennedy was killed on Friday 22nd November 1963.
John F. Kennedy was the 35th President at the age of 46. He was shot in the brain,
temple and neck at 2:00pm outside the Park Land hospital. He was shot by a rifle
and the guy that was driving was wounded. Lyndon B Johnson was sworn in at 3:30pm.
He was flown from Love Field Airfield, Dallas. They said he felt no pain and died in 40 minutes. He was a PT boat Commandant in the war. He was president for 2 years 10 months and 2 days. In the first car there was Kennedy and in the 2nd, the secret service and in the 3rd the Johnsons. New York listened in silence to the news and turned away sad. They said they should get on with it as Mr.Kennedy would.

Congratulations to past pupil Paul Curran

CONGRATULATIONS TO PAST PUPIL OF KILVEMNON NS; PAUL CURRAN

'The Nationalist' South Tipperary GAA Player of the Year Awards
HURLER OF THE YEAR
Paul Curran (Mullinahone)

Grandson of Rody Curran who played on Mullinahone's first hurling championship winning team in 1940 and a member of a family which continues to give tremendous service to club and county, he was a fine underage footballer and hurler winning numerous championships. He was a member of the only South Tipperary under 16 hurling team ever to win the Munster (A) championship in 1987 and he won a Munster minor medal with Tipperary in 1999 before progressing to the under 21 side.

He made the Fitzgibbon Cup winning Waterford I.T. team as a "fresher" in 2000 and captained them to victory in 2003. He played his first senior championship game against Offaly in 2002 having part of the extended panel All-Ireland winning panel of 2001. Last year he played a major role in Tipperary's National League and Munster Championship successes and his consistently outstanding performances had him on the short list for an all-Star award. At club level he has great memories of 2002 when in the space of eight days leading up to his 21st birthday he was one of the heroes of the Mullinahone team which captured county senior honours when defeating Thurles Sarsfields in a replay.

Also a fine footballer, Paul Curran has been a wonderful servant to club and county and perhaps the best days are yet to come from a man who now joins the illustrious company of John Leahy, Brian O'Meara, Eoin Kelly and Paul Kelly as Mullinahone winners of this award.

Visit from Mr. Sheehan

Mr.Sheehan came to our school today. He was talking about history. It was very interesting. He told us all the names of places and how they got them. He told us that people say they have been every where but not Mullinahone. Then he told us a poem about 'The Two Travellers' written by CJ Boland and one of them was a show off.
"And The man that was never in Mullinahone
Shouldn't say he had travelled at all."

He told us about CJ Kickham. CJ made up the Slievenamon song.He told us about Michaelangelo and then he told us about how Leonardo da Vinci got his name. He came from the village of Vinci.

Mr. Sheehan taught in our school and he also was a pupil here when he was young. The Irish name for Kilvemnon back then was called Cill Maighidne adn it means the Church of the Virgin Mary. Now people believe that it means the Church of St. Mheamnain. He told us how Cloneen got its name from 'Little Meadow.'
Mr. Sheehan is a really nice man and I can't wait to see him again next week for our next lesson on Mullinahone's history.

Research on Rome

Time in Rome;
Telling time in Rome was a vauge business. Romans rely on sundials and water clocks to tell the time,but neither are very accurate. Days last as long as the daylight and divided into twelve hours.
Who went to school in Roman time?

Boys and girls from far off places came to school at the age of seven. But poor children had to stay at home. Some of them ran errands for their parents or looked for work. Others played on the street and got into trouble.
What did the children play with?
Roman children played with lots of odds and evens. If they could not afford glass or pottery, marbles, they used little round nuts instead. They also threw dice made of bones. They even used pig's bladders to make balloons to play football with.

The Extreme Photographer Carsen Peter

Carsen Peter said this about his adventure on the Stromboli volcano in Italy. He is a photographer and I read about him in a magazine called National Geographic Kids.

"When I was 17,a friend and I climed the Stromboli volcano in Italy to capture its eruption on film. We set up our cameras on the very rim of the crater.Suddenly an explosion erupted from the volcano!. Giant bombs flaming rocks up to 60cm wide began spitting into the air . We started running and trying to dodge them,we forgot to turn on the cameras!. It really frightened me,but that was when I realised I had magma in my blood and taking awesome photos of extreme nature is what I wanted to do with my life".

Roman soldiers by Giggles

This Legionary is armed with the standard equipment given to all Roman soldiers at the time of the Empire. He is wearing a helmet with cheek guards, a shoulder strap or baldric guard, a sword in a scabbard, tunic made of wool, a groin guard, a segmented breastplate or cuirass, a shield and belts made of leather (but soldiers often decorated them)

What is a seisometer?

A seisometer is a machine that you put on a volcano.It measures its sound so you know when it it going to erupt.Mt.Vesuvius has a seisometer.It needs one because there are over one and a half million people living in the "danger zone" in Pompeii. Volcanoes are either:active,extinct or dormat.

An Ocean-Bottom Seisometer is a aluminium sphere of about 17 inches and are often bright orange or yellow in colour.Generally found on the seabed,but sometimes can break free from their anchorings and can drift ashore,but they pose no danger to the public or wildlife in the area.The seisometer is commonly used as a geoghysical instrument and are used in the Irish sea to measure movements in the oceanic plates.

Research on Rome

The Romans came from Rome and their capital city was Rome. They were clever people with new ideas about law,art,building and technolgy.With theirmighty army and strong leaders,they invaded and conqred many countries and built a Roman empire that would last from around 146 BC to AD 476. Some peope welcomed Roman rule,but many fought against it until they were beaten by the romans in battle.

Hadrians wall in nothern England and the Raetien border in Germany are two famous frontiers and they form part of a network of forts and towns that covered the whole Roman empire. The Romans had well organized supply lines, and the people who lived under Roman rule had to provied money,food,gold,silver and slaves. Roman armies were stationed all over the frontier to make sure they did!

Did you now.
Romans used metal shovels,just like the ones you can find today in any hardware store.
Roman engineers also built bridges and aquaducts.

Newspapers;
If your a fluent in Latin,a daily paper is called the Acta duirna actually a single handwritten sheet is handed out with the latest news.
Mail;
There's no postal service for ordinary citizens, but government mail is sent by courier. You could try charm or a bribe to have urgent letters included with the official mail. But its really not worth it if your only sending postcards home. They'll arrive months after you if they ever arrive.
Laundry.
If you have a toga it will need specialist dry cleaning. You can send your toga and other dirty washing to a fuller. Fullers generally treat cloth before its made into clothes, but they also offer a cleaning service.
Emergencies.
Since 6AD a combined police and fire-fighting force called the Cohors Vigilum has been in operation. They'll be on hand if your apartment catches fire, but don't expect them to do two jobs at once if your valuables are stolen.

Research on rome

The city of Rome wasn't big enough for all the Romans. All in all there were about 50 million people in the empire,which stretched from Britain in the north to Africa in the south. Everyone in the empire was protected by Rome's armies,but had to obey Rome's law.

The Romans were people who came from Rome.About 2,000 years ago they became so powerful that they began to conquer the lands around them. By 100 AD they ruled a huge empire,and were one of the mightiest people in ancient world.

Pale skin was a sure sign that a women came from a rich, noble family. Poorer women had to work outside. Their faces were burnt in the hot summer sun,and became rough and red on the cold winter winds.
